Are You Average?

Boredom

Do you consider yourself to be an average individual or do you think you have a little more to offer the world? The odds are good that if you are reading this blog, you consider yourself above average; most people do. With that in mind, why do so many settle for average lives spent working average jobs simply to try and keep up with their average neighbors? Average people are in debt. Average people give their most productive hours and years to someone else. Average people are not exceptionally happy. No one really wants to live like that, yet the vast majority of people do. You can do better.

The New Reality

Over the past 15-20 years we have seen a dramatic shift in how we earn our living. More and more traditional factory jobs disappear every day, as the work force shifts from assembly line worker to knowledge worker. Job security is no longer based on your employer, but rather on your skill set. While this shift certainly presents unique challenges for many, it is also rife with opportunity. In today’s marketplace, you can chart your own course and determine your own income. These are exciting times for people who choose to go beyond being average.

Being Remarkable

Seth Godin talks a lot about being remarkable. Remarkable people are not average, but they are formerly average people who have simply chosen to do extraordinary things. Some people get intimidated by the word “extraordinary”, because they think they could never do something that would be described in that way. Look at the word though; it simply means that you’ve done something a little bit more, a little extra, than ordinary. In other words, you’ve chosen to be the slightest bit more than average. In a world full of the status quo, that is remarkable.

Only One Life

We get only one life to live on this planet, and it is up to us to decide how we will spend that time. Something I’ve observed as I’ve aged is that the older you get, the faster time seems to fly.  When you are young, time seems expansive and that there will always be an opportunity to pursue your passion at a later date. The older you get, the more you realize how fleeting time actually is. Too many times we are paralyzed waiting for the stars to align for the perfect time to stop existing and to start living. There will never be a better time to act than now, but there will always be plenty more time for you to waste.

Stop Being Average

Don’t live your life content with being average. You have dreams and passions; let them out, don’t let them die inside of you.  We live at a time in history that affords us the opportunity to really become anything we want to be. Will you waste that gift by living an average, ordinary, unremarkable life? Don’t settle for average. Live your dreams. Share your gifts and passions with the world. We will all be richer for it.

Question: What dreams have you kept hidden inside because you were afraid to act?
